Ah, the age of disco, that was the best time in my life. If you can remember ‘Can You Dig It?’, then you will know what I mean! It was ‘far out’ the most exciting time in my young life. I remember going to many a ‘super disco party’ and we would groove and boogie all night until the break of dawn.
Let me give you the ‘skinney’: in the golden age of disco, it was the craze in all of America. It even spread to Europe, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. And the Caribbean was my spot. At first, we were just a group of friends who just regularly went to the sparse few disco clubs in Miami and sometimes went ‘bootin’ at the roller disco clubs. I remember fondly the words we used: ‘to the max’, ‘catch you on the flip side’, ‘feel the funk’, ‘keep on truckin’, ‘right on’ and many more! It was the halcyon days of youth for me and my close friends. Sure enough, we had to grow up.
To earn money, sometimes we would work as temps for a guy who did ‘mobile DJ karaoke. It was then we first learned how to use mobile equipment. I remember all of us saving up and chipping in to buy our very own DJ set: the turntables, the mixer, the works! We would offer ‘wedding DJ services and also would act as wedding party DJ for many of our friends’ friends.
When we really took off, we started hauling mobile disco equipment from South Beach to Nassau to DJ in parties for some of our well-to-do clients and here we got to know the ‘high life’. People were just fabulous or ‘fab’ as we used to say back then. I would let out a chuckle whenever I hear someone ‘jive’ talking. It meant that someone is trying to talk you into something. But then, we also experienced the bad side of the party. Some people would call it the hangover. For sure, if you party too much and you lose track of what’s important, it’s easy to slide down to the dark side. After all, we were in Miami, the Caribbean and sometimes we would go north to New York. This was the cocaine highway in America back then.
True enough, I was at one point hooked on the candy cane. It was a dark time in my life. It had come up to the point where I was going to sell it for a living, I had forgotten all about being a DJ and making music. It was all about the blow for me. I realized my mistake when one of my good friends realized that I was planning to sell all my equipment. He probably knew exactly what I was going to do so he tried to dissuade me from continuing on my path. That was the turning point in my life. The fact that someone card enough was proof that there was more to life than parties, drugs and luxury. I forgot what was important.
